Brand-New Railway Cars Produced in Tikhvin
03/03/2009 | Press Release
The Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant (TVSZ) (Russia, Leningrad Region) produced new models of freight cars created by the technology of the North-American businesses: the Standard Car Truck Company and Starfire Engineering & Technologies, Inc. By 2012 TVSZ is targeted to produce 10 000 railcars of the kind.
Senior vice-president of Russian Railways Valentin Gapanovich, vice-governor of the Leningrad region Grigory Dvas, vice-presidents of the ICT group Nikolai Dobrinov and Igor Tsyplakov, and director general of ZAO CTS (TVSZ managing company) Alexey Aleshin participated in the event.
The project for the construction of the Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant, being implemented by the ICT Group of companies together with Vnesheconombank and Eurazian Development Bank, was recognized as the best investment project in transport engineering in the CIS territory.
The Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant creation is carried out within complete reconstruction of the Transmash plant production facilities. The total cost of the project for construction of the Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant is estimated at over $800 mln. The project involves leading global technology and equipment providers for foundry, machining, and painting production stages of TVSZ – companies from the USA, Spain, Israel, Germany, etc. The space of the production premises will amount to about 220 thousand m². The number of employees will be equal about to 3,5 thousand people. The rated plant capacity is targeted at 10 000 railcars per annum.
A solid-bottom gondola, a universal bottom-discharge gondola and a hopper car for mineral fertilizers transportation were designed on the basis of the 18-9810 Barber Bogie and produced at the prototype workshop of the Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant.
The Barber car is the most widespread model not only in the USA, where it holds 75% of the market, but it is also widely used in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, China and in some states of North and Central Africa.
“In contrast to the native 18-100 Bogie, which is installed on the majority of freight cars in Russia and the CIS, the 18-9810 Bogie, produced at the Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant, has accommodated all up-to-date engineering solutions,” said Alexey Aleshin, director general of ZAO CTS (TVSZ managing company). The estimated inter-repair distance run of Bogie 18-9810 makes up to 500,000 km, and for some design elements - up to 1 mln km. The inter-repair run of the current bogie does not exceed 200,000 km. Moreover, the TVSZ bogie will allow cutting costs of maintenance and repair and improving the dynamic behavior of the car.
The expected performance of the new bogie is proved by the research of the Russian scientific centers. According to OAO NVC Vagony, the life span cost of the Barber bogie is 24% lower than that of the existing Russian analogs majority.
Thus production of the new freight cars on the basis of the Barber bogie will be a technological and economic breakthrough on the Russian railway transportation market.
The car truck design is developed by one of the leaders in freight car undercarriage engineering – the Standard Car Truck Company (USA), a member of the “Wabtec” corporation. Alongside with the presented wagons, TVSZ plans to produce flat-cars for transportation of large-capacity containers of 80-feet lading length.
Production of the new railway machinery alongside with the construction of the Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant manifests that, despite of the crisis in the Russian and world economy, the ICT Group with Vnesheconombank and Eurazian Development Bank continues to realize successfully one of the largest machine-building projects in the Russian Federation which contributes to the state program of the domestic transport industry modernization.
